Onyx

Green in sunlight. Red in lamplight. Colour-changing alexandrite is nature’s magic trick.

Onyx is a variety of chalcedony known for its distinctive parallel bands of colour, typically black and white. Although natural black onyx does exist, it is relatively rare.

In its natural form, black onyx often features white banding. It is commonly dyed to either enhance or remove these bands depending on its intended use. Banded onyx is particularly suited for cameos and carvings, each piece being unique. While onyx can be dyed in various colours like blue, green, pink, and white, it is most renowned for its deep black hue. This versatility and elegance make onyx a favourite among jewellery professionals and consumers, adding a touch of sophistication to any piece, especially when paired with summer whites.
