Garnet
Garnets are a set of closely related minerals forming a group, with gemstones in almost every colour.
Garnets are a diverse group of minerals that form a range of gemstones in almost every colour of the spectrum. While red garnets are the most common and historically significant, today's gem enthusiasts can choose from a wide array of colours, including greens, oranges, pinkish oranges, deeply saturated purplish reds, and even some rare blues.
Red garnets are widely found in metamorphic rocks around the world. However, other garnet varieties are less common. For example, tsavorite, a green garnet, is rarer due to its specific formation conditions and unusual rock chemistries.
Notable garnet types include demantoid, a rare and prized green variety; spessartine (or spessartite), which displays an attractive orange hue; and rhodolite, known for its beautiful purple-red color. Some garnets also exhibit color-changing properties similar to the rare alexandrite.
Although all garnets share a similar crystal structure, they differ in their chemical composition. There are over twenty known garnet species, but only five are commercially significant: pyrope, almandine (or almandite), spessartine, grossular (or grossularite), and andradite. A sixth type, uvarovite, is a green garnet that usually forms as small crystals, often used in clusters for jewelry. Many garnets are actually chemical blends of two or more species.
